Windows Updates

New Windows vulnerabilities are being discovered all the time that can permit an attacker to gain complete control over an affected system. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you update your computer with a security patch every time a patch comes out. We've provided step-by-step instructions (just follow the links below) but you can contact the Training Team if you need assistance.

What do I need to do?

You will need to go online to this Microsoft website:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Once you are at that site, click the Express Install link. This will allow Microsoft to scan your computer and see if you still need the latest security patch to protect your machine.

Windows will now look for updates.  Once the site completes scanning, press the Install button to install the updates.  You MUST choose to install any Critical Updates and Service Packs.

We strongly recommend that you change your Windows settings so that critical updates are automatically downloaded to your computer. For instructions, click here.

When new critical updates are ready to be installed, the Windows Update symbol will appear in the lower right corner of your screen.

Why do I need to do this?

By taking a few moments to protect your system now, you are ensuring your computer and the McCombs computer network stay safe. ITS monitors the networks and may block network access for any unpatched computers. That means you would not be able to access the Internet from campus!
