Email Policy

Because of the expanding reliance on electronic communication between students, faculty, staff/administration at the McCombs School of Business, it is necessary to ensure that all business students have e-mail access. E-mail is an official mechanism for communication within the McCombs School. Therefore, the following policies have been adopted to ensure uniform student access to this critical form of communication:

  • All students will be assigned an official Business School e-mail address. This address is the location to which all official e-mail communications will be sent, and will be the default address posted in the University Electronic Directory for that student.
  • A student may have e-mail electronically forwarded to another e-mail address.
  • Students are expected to check their e-mail on a frequent and regular basis in order to stay current with University-related communications. Recognizing that certain communications may be time-critical, it is recommended that e-mail be checked daily or at a minimum, twice-per-week. Consequently, “I didn’t check my e-mail” or returned mail with “Mailbox Full” or “user unknown,” is not an acceptable excuse.
  • Although the McCombs School has computer labs, they are utilized frequently by students completing class projects and assignments. As such, there are many times that the labs are unable to keep up with student demand. Therefore, it is required that all undergraduate business students have access to a computer with internet capabilities outside of the Business School building.

3 Important Computer Accounts

1. McCombs School of Business account: (MSB account)

Only business school students, staff, and faculty have an MSB account. It is used for:

In addition, you are also given server space to save files (H: Drive) and web space. If you forget your MSB password visit the Millennium Lab proctors (CBA 5.322) to have it reset.

2. IF account (Individually Funded):

ITS (Informational Technology Services) is responsible for your IF account (also known as a personal account). It allows you to:

  • Print at any UT computer lab (including the McCombs School of Business)
  • Logon to any university computer outside of the McCombs School of Business
  • Use Telesys or Resnet (UT’s Internet Service Providers)

3. UT EID account:

Your UT EID is an electronic identifier that will allow you to use secure services that are part of UT Austin's campus information (for example, registration for classes or sports ticket draws). If you don't know your UT EID or password you must go to the Registrar's Office, Room 16, Main Building. Do not attempt to login if you are uncertain of your UT EID or password. The system will lock your account if you attempt to login incorrectly five times. You will have to stop by the Registrar’s Office to have your account unlocked.

Students also need their UT EID to access wireless internet services in the McCombs School of Business and elsewhere on campus.
