FAQ for Transferring Courses
Q. Are transfer grades calculated into my gpa?
A. No, grades earned at other institutions are not calculated into a student's UT Austin grade point average. The grades will appear on a UT Austin official transcript, however. Students must earn a C or better to receive transfer credit for a course.
Q. How many hours can I transfer in?
A. Students must complete the following "in-residence" (in a UT Austin classroom – no transfer work, placement credit, correspondence or extension courses):
- A total of 60 hours.
- 24 hours of Business.
- 12 upper-division hours in the student's major.
- 24 of the last 30 hours.
Q. Can I take a class pass/fail at another school and transfer it to UT Austin?
A. If it is a required class that you would need to take on a letter-grade basis at UT Austin, it must be taken for a letter-grade at any other school. Free electives and non-business electives may be taken pass/fail. And again, students must earn a C or better to receive transfer credit for a course.
Q. Do I have to "claim" my transfer credit for it to appear on my records?
A. No, you do not need to "claim" transfer credit in the same way as credit earned from placement tests. Have an official transcript sent to the UT Austin Office of Admissions and the credit will be added to your UT Austin record.
Q. Can I take an upper-division class (UT Austin courses numbered 320 or above) at a junior college?
A. No - junior and community college courses transfer as lower-division (freshman or sophomore) credit. Undergraduate courses from senior colleges transfer at the same level, lower- or upper-division, as they were taken. Graduate-level coursework is not transferable as undergraduate credit.
