- The University of St. Gallen was founded in 1898 and began operating in 1899.
- St. Gallen is one of Europe’s smaller educational institutions, but has one of the largest faculties of economic sciences.
- The University of St. Gallen is a Swiss university with an international orientation and an international reputation. 25% of its students are foreign and more than 40 nations are represented at the university, with the largest groups coming from neighboring countries (Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein).
- Courses in English and German offered.

- It was only in 1848 that Switzerland became a more centralized federal state.
- German is by far the most widely spoken language in Switzerland: 17 of the 26 cantons are monolingual in German. French is spoken in the western part of the country, the "Suisse Romande." Four cantons are French-speaking: Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel and Vaud. Three cantons are bilingual: in Bern, Fribourg and Valais both French and German are spoken. Italian is spoken in Ticino and 4 southern valleys of Grisons. Rhaeto-Rumantsch (Rumantsch) is spoken only in the trilingual canton of Graubünden. It is spoken by just 0.5% of the total Swiss population.
