Business Foundations Certificate


***IMPO‚ÄčRTANT***  Only students enrolled under the 2014-2016 UT Academic Catalog or earlier are eligible to earn the Business Foundations Certificate. If you enrolled in the 2016 - 2018 UT Academic Calendar, please see the Business Foundations Minor page.


The Texas Business Foundations Certificate is an additional credential that students at the University of Texas are able to earn through 24 hours (8 classes) of specified coursework. The coursework is designed to give students a fundamental understanding of common business topics such as Finance, Accounting, Management, and Business Law. The certificate students earn will display their comprehension of the building blocks of any business environment to their future employers.


Certification Process

  • Step 1: Register for the Business Foundation Program: BFP Certificate Registration
  • Step 2: Begin taking BFP classes with your UT coursework or apply to the McCombs Summer Institute
  • Step 3: Track your certificate progress to stay up to date with what you have completed: BFP Certificate Tracking
  • Step 4: During your last semester of BFP coursework, submit your certificate request: BFP Certificate Request 
  • Step 5: Once the semester ends, the certification program will run and a digital copy of your certificate will be sent to the e-mail address you provide.
    • (Students do not need to request certification until the beginning of their final semester of study, but can submit the form at any time)


Business Foundations: Global vs. General Track

In addition to the General Business Foundations Certificate, a Global Track is also offered for those interested in the International Business frontier. For more information on the Global Track (click here). 

Coursework Overview

To earn the Business Foundations Certificate students will need to complete the following courses: 

  • 3 hours of Economics
  • 3 hours of Statistics 
  • MIS 302F - Foundations of Management Information Systems
  • ACC 310F - Foundations of Accounting 
  • FIN 320F - Foundations of Finance (starting Fall 2017 ACC 310F will be a pre-requisite for FIN 320F)

(Students will also need to take 3 of the following classes)

  • LEB 320F - Foundations of Business Law
  • MAN 320F - Foundations of Management 
  • MKT 320F - Foundations of Marketing
  • BA 320F - Foundations of Entrepreneurship 
  • IB 320F - Foundations of International Business
