Year in Review: Marketing Department’s Exciting New Endeavors

by Wayne Hoyer, Chair, Department of Marketing

Wayne HoyerThis has been an exciting and productive year for the Department of Marketing at the McCombs School of Business. We have engaged in a variety of interesting and important initiatives.  First, we (along with Peter Zandan of Hill & Knowlton) developed and initiated the Texas Energy Poll which serves as an index and survey of public opinion with regard to energy issues. A major goal for this study is to serve as an impartial authoritative source of public opinion on energy issues.  Two waves of the poll have been conducted with a third scheduled for the Fall.  The Poll has received considerable press coverage after press conferences in Washington, DC, Houston, and Austin. Read a full summary of the Energy Poll’s results on Texas Enterprise.

Second, John Highbarger directed an MBA student project for the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio (associated with the UT Health Science Center).  The Center is one of the world’s leading cancer research and treatment centers but suffers from key marketing problems, particularly a lack of awareness.  John and several other faculty members led a team of MBA students in developing a detailed marketing plan for the Center.Yoo-hoo

Third, the Center for Customer Insight and Marketing Solutions launched the McCombs Brand Experience in spring 2012, offering real-world opportunities for MBA students to experience live marketing roles, with actual accountability for results.  The first effort is piloted by two MBA students who are working as the brand team for the chocolate drink Yoo-hoo, a $100 million Dr Pepper Snapple Group brand.

Fourth, the department has expanded our international focus.  In the last 3 years, the Department has sponsored 14 visiting scholars from around the world from countries such as Germany, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, and China.

Finally, several of our faculty have been honored with teaching awards. Kevin Williams has won 5 teaching awards in the last 3 years. This year, Kate Mackie won a teaching award for outstanding teaching in MBA electives.  Also, a number of our faculty have been named to the Faculty Honor Roll for outstanding teaching.

In summary, our department has been very active with exciting initiatives and we look forward to even more in years to come.
