We are living in one of the truly momentous periods of world history!  Events in the global arena impact nearly every area of business, economic, and public policy.   The International Business Fellows Seminar (IBFS) provides the opportunity to study events and forces affecting and re-shaping the world from a multi-disciplinary view at the graduate level.  Enrolling in this seminar will help prepare you to better understand this changing world in which you will pursue your career and expand your leadership potential in your chosen profession.

IBFS is open to graduate students from all programs at The University and is cross listed in:

  • MBA Program
  • LBJ School of Public Affairs
  • Latin American Studies
  • Middle East Studies
  • Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies

The unique feature of IBFS is that you will have the opportunity to:

  • Follow historic events as they unfold around the world in real time.
  • Consider the forces driving those events.
  • Explore these events along with students and faculty across UT, as well as, with and a variety of professional experts enabling you to understand global events from diverse, intriguing perspectives.  

The course meets weekly as a seminar to facilitate multi-faceted discussion topics such as the key challenges in critical regions across the world, national security, political instability, state of the world economy, globalization, labor, and income inequality.   Speakers include highly distinguished experts such as Professors Bobby Inman, James Galbraith, Shelton Williams, and McCombs own Stephen Magee.   This is a course for those who want to think deeply about the future of the world and their ability to affect the future.

The class will meet Spring 2016 on Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  More information may be obtained from the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER at 471-7875).

SYLFF Doctoral Fellowship

The objective of these awards is to support doctoral dissertation research on topics combining international and business perspectives. The fellowships are provided through an endowment from the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) of the Tokyo Foundation. They will be made only to doctoral students:

  1. who are currently enrolled in a graduate program at The University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin)
  2. who have been admitted to candidacy, and
  3. whose approved dissertation research addresses, wholly or in significant part, the objective described above.

Complete the SYLFF Doctoral Fellowship Application Form and ask your graduate adviser to submit nominations to CIBER in the McCombs School. Applications will be reviewed by the UT-Austin SYLFF Steering Committee, with input from McCombs School Doctoral Advisory Committee.

Applicants must be currently enrolled at UT-Austin and admitted to candidacy. Awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School, a well-defined program of research that combines international and business perspectives, a strong personal statement, and a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s doctoral advisor.

Application Deadline: Extended to February 20, for the following academic year
Stipend: $10,000 Generally, four such awards are available annually.

Export Fellows Program

Hands-on experience, real-world instruction:
Create a market entry plan guided by successful practitioners.

The Camino Real District Export Council offers a special program to UT Business Foundations students interested in exporting. The Export Fellows Program introduces students to export marketing concepts and strategies in three 3-hour evening sessions. Presenters are active practitioners in international trade.


  • Resources and techniques for market research
  • Managing non-tariff barriers
  • Choosing an exportable product
  • Identifying appropriate market(s)
  • Choosing a method of market entry
  • Designing a market entry strategy  


Three workshop sessions held in CBA 3.138:

  • Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 5:00-8:00 p.m. 
  • Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 5:00-8:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 5:00-8:00 p.m.

Student plans are presented and certificates are awarded at a dinner on Wednesday, April 22, 2015.

Program Details

  • The EFP is underwritten by the District Export Council and free to attend.
  • There is no prerequisite coursework.
  • There is no UT credit. Participants receive a certificate from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
  • Open to registered UT undergraduate non-business majors.

The program simulates market entry analysis through a student project, and offers a forum for informal dialogue between students and instructors. After the program sessions end, student teams create an international marketing plan for the product of their choice. They present the plans and receive certificates from the U.S. Department of Commerce at the program’s final dinner, hosted at a restaurant near campus. The Export Fellows Program sessions and dinner are free to attend.

District Export Councils (DECs) are volunteer organizations of leaders from local business communities who provide professional advice to local firms. The 58 DECs are closely affiliated with the Commerce Department’s U.S. Export Assistance Centers. They support trade promotion activities and supply specialized expertise to small and mid-sized businesses.
