The Texas Private Equity Conference is sponsored annually by the Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst Center for Private Equity Finance. The conference provides an opportunity for finance researchers and practitioners in the private equity markets to discuss private equity. The conference will address issues of interest to both the venture capital and buyout communities.

Panel 1: The Role of Private Equity in the Formation and Restructuring of Oil and Gas Companies
This session will examine the role of private equity in the oil and gas space, including the role of private equity 
in helping with the birth of new companies, restructuring existing companies that are in distress, and purchasing
assets.  The panel will discuss current and possible future activities in each of these areas, as well as the role
that private equity plays in fostering innovation in the oil and gas industry.

This session will examine how increases in private company pricing and lower return expectations
are affecting investment decisions, fee structures, co-investment and direct investment activity by LPs. 
Private funds currently have considerably more than $1.0 trillion in committed, but un-invested, capital. 
This large amount of available capital has increased competition for private investments and driven up
deal multiples and prices.  These higher prices, combined with uncertain exit opportunities, longer
holding periods, and a slow growth economic environment are driving private equity returns below
public market equivalents.  In this environment, LPs are increasingly seeking to reduce fees directly
or by co-investing or direct investments to enhance their net returns.

The convergence of several disruptive technologies, including artificial intelligence, internet of things,
cloud technology, and mobility will greatly impact how business is conducted and the opportunities
available to investors.  This session will examine the investment implications of the individual technologies
and their convergence, with illustrations from selected industries.  The objective is to help investors across
the private equity spectrum better understand the changes that are taking place and think about how
these changes are likely to affect the types of businesses that they invest in.

Robert Borden
Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer
Delegate Advisors

Mr. Borden has over 30 years of experience in institutional investment management and is currently Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of Delegate Advisors, a Multi-family Office and Outsourced CIO solutions provider. From 2006 to 2011, he served as the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of the $29 billion South Carolina Retirement System Investment Commission. From 1995 to 2006, Mr. Borden served as the Executive Director and Chief Investment Officer of the $10 billion Louisiana State Employees Retirement System (“LASERS”). 

Prior to joining LASERS, Mr. Borden served as Treasurer and Senior Manager of Financial Services for Texas Mutual. He was previously Vice President of Treasury and Interest Rate Risk Manager of Franklin Federal Bancorp. He began his career in 1982 at the Bond Division of the Texas State Treasury. 
Mr. Borden currently sits on multiple public company and mutual fund boards.

He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in Finance and earned a Master of Science degree in Finance from Louisiana State University. Mr. Borden holds both the Chartered Financial Analyst and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst professional designations.


Sean Ward
Managing Director
Dyal Capital Partners

Sean Ward is a Managing Director of Neuberger Berman and a founding member of the Dyal Capital Partners Investment Team. Previously a Vice President at Lehman Brothers, Sean held several roles at Neuberger Berman after it became an independent firm, including Senior Counsel for NB Alternatives. Prior to joining the firm, he was an associate at Covington & Burling LLP, where his practice focused on mergers and acquisitions, public and private securities offerings and credit transactions. Prior to Covington & Burling LLP, Sean worked at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP in New York and London. 

Sean received his JD, magna cum laude, from the Duke University School of Law and holds a BA, magna cum laude, in Diplomatic History and Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania.

Robert Strauss
Managing Director
Peak Rock

Mr. Strauss is a Managing Director of Peak Rock. Most recently he was a Principal at Aurora Resurgence and previously he was a Principal at Insight Equity. Mr. Strauss focused on making debt and equity investments in a variety of middle market companies at both prior firms and has served as a board member or observer for numerous portfolio companies. Prior to Insight Equity, Mr. Strauss was an Investment Analyst with Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, and prior to Hicks Muse, Mr. Strauss was a Financial Analyst in the investment banking divisions of Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette and Salomon Smith Barney.

Mr. Strauss received a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin.
