Student Corporate Relations

Student organizations within the McCombs School of Business are encouraged to seek funding from companies to support their meetings, programs, and events. Please follow these guidelines to ensure your interactions with corporate representatives reflect our Longhorn best!

Solicitation Guidelines

Remember that you and your student organization represent the McCombs School of Business and The University of Texas at Austin – always be professional, respectful, and thankful when corresponding with company representatives. Once your student organization has identified companies to approach for funding, follow these steps:

1. Ensure your Sponsorship One-Pager/Proposal has clearly defined levels and benefits.

  • Who, What, Why, When, and How Much? Be sure to answer each of these in your proposal.
  • Be aware of the timeframe in of your ask and allow at least one month of notice before your event.
  • Use exact amounts, not a range, and stick to easy fractions of your top sponsor level (Example: $2,500, $1,000, $500, $250)
  • Think about benefits from the lens of the corporation; be specific and clear.
  • Check out this awesome one-pager highlighting the Local Women’s Case Competition.

2. If you have multiple corporate supporters, be sure that companies are compatible and not competitors. Please contact us if you have any questions.

3. Log your Corporate Sponsorship Asks and Awards through our Student Corporate Relations Reporting Form. See below for instructions and form. After you report an award, we will be able to invoice your sponsor and process their payment to get your funding!

4. Craft a timely thank you letter for each corporate supporter. You should submit your letter to our within a week of your confirmed award. See Resources for our Thank You Letter Template.

Log Corporate Sponsorship Asks and Awards

It is critical that you track your student organization’s asks and awards to all corporate sponsors. This will help the CFR team to track which sponsors fit well with your organization and to invoice your donors in a timely manner.

Wait – what is the difference between an ask and an award?

Ask – A respectful solicitation for support of your organization. At this point, you haven’t yet received funding.

Award – A successful solicitation for support of your organization. You’ve been promised a monetary gift and now it’s time for a thank you letter.

Please use this survey to track all your Corporate Sponsorship Asks and Awards.
