Admissions Consideration

In general, the program looks for well-rounded new Ph.D. students with balanced strengths in motivation, academic skills, communication skills, quantitative skills, and institutional knowledge of the area of study.

Admission is based on a comprehensive evaluation of the applicant. From test scores to statement of purpose to letters of recommendation to transcripts, the team evaluates candidates in a holistic way based on all criteria, including the applicant's academic, practical, and socio-economic background.

Admissions Decisions

We begin reviewing your application only after your application is complete, and we have received your online application and all supporting materials. Due to the large volume of extremely qualified applicants, we are only able to consider those who comply with the deadlines.

Final approval of all admitted for each department varies slightly, although admissions decisions are usually sent out by early March.

Requirements - Texas McCombs Doctoral Program

There is no specific background or previous work experience required. The program’s student body consists of individuals from a variety of personal, professional, and educational backgrounds. Their most important distinguishing features are an eagerness to discover new things and an aptitude for research methods in business.

There are no required courses or area-specific undergraduate degrees to begin a Texas McCombs doctoral program. However, it is highly beneficial to have a background or training in the program’s core disciplines of economics, math, and psychology, as well as a good understanding of the basic principles of your intended area of study. Suggested preparation and qualifications are detailed within the individual area of study.

Financial Aid

Financial Assistance is typically provided to all students admitted to the McCombs Doctoral Program in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, fellowships, special grants, or through an appointment as an assistant instructor.

For most students, the combination of stipends and assistantships, plus paid health insurance, means that tuition and modest living expenses are covered.

For more information, go to Graduate School Financial Aid.

Student Parental Accommodation Policy

In the cases of childbirth or adoption, the McCombs School of Business provides four types of accommodations for qualifying doctoral students. These accommodations are available to full-time enrolled McCombs School of Business doctoral students (enrolled for at least nine credit hours each long semester and three hours in the summer) who are in good academic standing.

The accommodations are available to students who experience a childbirth (either who give birth or whose spouse or partner gives birth) or who adopt a child. It is the responsibility of the doctoral student anticipating a birth or adoption to inform his or her graduate adviser and research supervisor of any anticipated accommodation needs as early as possible, preferably at least 4 months advance notice, and complete a Parental Accommodation Form for Doctoral Student Parents.

For more information, refer to the McCombs Doctoral Student Parental Accommodation Policy.
