IM Program Holds Advisory Council Meeting

The IM Program hosted their annual Advisory Council meeting on September 18th. Top leadership from companies such as GM, Dell, PwC, and many more joined UT faculty to discuss the current state and future of the IM Program.

Sirkka Jarvenpaa (Professor) and Clint Tuttle (Lecturer) kicked off the meeting welcoming these professionalsIM Advisory Council members and thanking them for their vested interest in the program. Steve Gilbert, the new chairman for the IROM department, gave an update on the department and MIS program. MIS is now the largest major at McCombs with more than 376 students seeking an MIS degree! Katie Gray (Senior Lecturer) informed the council of the new updates to the MIS curriculum (click here for more information on our curriculum update). After a short break and some good old-fashioned face to face networking, Tom Painter of GM led the council on a discussion of the “Internet of Things.”

Following lunch, Frank Trogus, a retired Shell employee, wrapped up the meeting by laying out the key points that attendees should take away from the meeting. Council members commented on general characteristics that they hope to see in employees. Students, especially in the technology field, should be adaptable and ready for change at all times. Jennifer Erickson of Dell commented that she’s looking for employees who can adopt the mindset of “walking in the shoes” of the client.

With representation from more than 15 companies, the ideas and feedback from these corporate representatives was highly valuable. As always, we appreciate their time and look forward to the next gathering at the 2016 IM Advisory Council Meeting!
