Ph.D. in Management


The Management Department faculty is composed of individuals with diverse interests who are actively engaged in research, and who have established reputations in both teaching and research. The faculty produce many papers, monographs and books each year, and regularly present research papers at national meetings. In addition, they hold offices in national professional associations; serve on editorial boards of leading journals; are consultants to corporations and government agencies; teach both domestically and internationally; have won many teaching and research awards; and have received numerous research grants from major corporations, foundations, and government agencies.


The mission of the Ph.D. program in Management is to produce individuals who shape both the academic profession and the practice of management through their excellence in research, teaching, and service. The program focuses on establishing a solid conceptual and methodological foundation that graduates can build on throughout their careers. The vast majority of the program experiences are designed to develop the students' research abilities, and to prepare them to communicate that research to a variety of audiences.


Graduates of the program are trained to design and execute original, high quality research that will be published in the major scholarly journals and books of the profession. We believe that research published in such outlets will have the greatest impact because of the standards of excellence that they represent. Such research should attempt to advance theory as well as have implications for the practice of management. Expertise in research is developed through students' participation in formal coursework and, more importantly, through their work with and under the direction of faculty on research projects.


Graduates of the program are expected to exhibit the skills needed to successfully teach management courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. By giving students the opportunity to teach courses in their area of specialization under the direction of a faculty member, the program provides a foundation that allows them to become excellent teachers. Both course development and in-class teaching skills are considered essential.


Graduates of the program are encouraged to make substantive service contributions to the academic profession. However, they are not expected or encouraged to do so until after they graduate. Such contributions may include membership on editorial review boards, holding offices in prominent professional associations, dissertation supervision, serving on departmental and schools committees, among others. These activities are no substitute for excellence in research and teaching, but are critical to maintaining an efficient and collegial community.

Organizations and Strategy Specializations

The Ph.D. with a major in Organizations & Strategy involves the study of organizations, the individuals and groups who participate in them, the role and problems of general managers, and the larger social and economic context in which organizations operate. Students within the Organizations & Strategy specialization will be exposed to literatures drawn from both Organization Science and Strategic Management, and then will concentrate their doctoral studies in one of these two areas.

Organization Science Concentration

Organization Science encompasses a wide variety of topics at the individual, group, and organizational levels of analysis. Current faculty research interests include:

Strategic Management Concentration

Strategic Management is concerned with the role and problems of general managers, studied from the perspective of those managers. General managers are, in turn, those individuals responsible for entire businesses or multifunctional business units. Examples of major topics studied in this area include:

  • executive compensation
  • diversification
  • competitive strategy
  • industry analysis
  • selection and behavior of general managers
  • the composition and processes of top management teams

Because of the wide range of rich topics pursued in both the Organization Science and the Strategic Management areas, research in this field frequently builds on contributions from diverse disciplines, including sociology, psychology, communications, industrial organization economics, political science, anthropology, and decision theory. In addition, a wide variety of research designs are used and mastery of both quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques is essential. The formal training program begins with coursework. However, the program emphasizes early and continued involvement in collaborative research projects with faculty.

The application for admission to the doctoral program consists of TWO parts. You must submit both parts in order for your application file to be reviewed. Please follow the instructions carefully. We require that you apply online at Texas Common Application.

Part 1:

The following materials must be uploaded after you have completed and paid for your application via UT's Status Check webpage by December 15. Please note all uploaded documents will be considered unofficial copies and official copies of transcripts must be mailed to GIAC only after you have been admitted into the program. If you mail application material to GIAC prior to being admitted into the program the speed at which your application is reviewed will be greatly reduced. 2. Transcripts (Please request your official transcripts, with the final grades from all of the colleges and universities you have attended, be sent directly to GIAC only after you have been admitted into the program)
When uploading transcripts, note you will only be allowed to upload one PDF file per school. This means if you have a multiple page transcript for one school you will need to create one PDF file for that school. Gradesheets should not be uploaded in place of transcripts. Applications with gradesheets in place of transcripts will be considered incomplete. If you are uploading a foreign transcript, you must also include the translated version as part of the one PDF file for that school.

3. Official GRE or GMAT scores
Please request your GRE or GMAT scores be sent to GIAC. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) code for GRE scores at the University of Texas at Austin is 6882; the code for GMAT scores is 396-44-45.

4. Official TOEFL scores (International students)
An exception is made for foreign students who obtained a bachelor's degree in the U.S. or other English-speaking country. International students must submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

5. Application fee (please note: applications submitted without the required application processing fee will not be reviewed)

2. Three Letters of Reference (PDF document)
On your ApplyTexas application, you will be asked to list the names and email addresses of the three people you have chosen to recommend you for admission. Once you submit your application, an email will be sent to each recommender instructing them to visit a website and complete a questionnaire. The letters will automatically be routed to the department. Online submission of recommendations is strongly preferred, but we will accept paper recommendations if absolutely necessary.

3. Your Statement of Purpose (PDF document)
Your Statement of Purpose should discuss your interest in our Ph.D. program and your reasons for doing graduate work at the University of Texas.  Your statement should be no more than two pages long; it may be accompanied by a current resumé or vita, list of publications, etc. Your statement of purpose is an important part of your application and care should be taken in writing it. If you have submitted your statement of purpose online you do not need to mail it in to the department.

4. A Resumé
Please provide your current resumé. You can upload it via UT's Status Check webpage . Please include a section on research experience, if applicable.

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral program in management, an applicant is required to have (at least) a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a high level of competency in the English language.

All doctoral students are admitted for a full-time degree program, which begins in the fall. Spring enrollment is not permitted. Each year we receive between 85 to 125 applications for three to six spots in the entering class so the admissions process is very competitive. For example, the average GMAT percentile score for entering students is typically around the 95th percentile.

All applicants are required to take either the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) in time for the results to reach the Department of Management by the application deadline, December 15. The test must be taken within the past five years. International students must also submit an official report of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). An exception is made for foreign students who obtained a bachelor's degree in the U.S. or another English-speaking country.

What is the minimum GMAT/GRE score?
There is no minimum GMAT/GRE score required to apply. Our application process is completely holistic and there are many factors taken into consideration. The average GMAT/GRE percentile score for entering students is typically around the 95th percentile.

What is the required TOEFL or IELTS score?
A score of 550 (paper test), 213 (computer-based test), or 79 (internet-based test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is considered the minimum acceptable for admission to The University of Texas at Austin.

As an international applicant, how can I waive the TOEFL?
If you hold a bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution or from an institution in another English-only speaking country, you will receive a waiver of the TOEFL or IELTS. We will not waive the requirement for the TOEFL or IELTS scores if you earned only a master's degree from a U.S institution or from an institution in another English-only speaking country. 

Can I apply for admissions for the spring semester?
No, spring enrollment is not permitted. We only enroll new students for the fall semesters.

 What is the ETS code for UT at Austin?
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) code for the University of Texas at Austin is 6882.  Test scores sent to this code are made available to all graduate departments. The GMAT code is 396-44-45.

Financial Assistance

Financial assistance is typically provided to all doctoral students.  This assistance may be in the form of a teaching assistantship (TA), research assistantship (RA), fellowship, special grant, or appointment as an Assistant Instructor (AI).  The Department is committed to granting students some type of financial support for a maximum of five years in the program providing they  maintain satisfactory progress in the program.  After the five-year time limit has passed, there is no guarantee of further Departmental support, although students beyond the fifth year may receive support if funds are available.

Teaching Appointments

Prospective students may be considered for appointment as a Teaching Assistant (TA), a position that typically involves assisting a faculty member with research and classroom activities.  The minimum pay is approximately $14,000 half-time (i.e., 20 hours/week), for twelve months.

Advanced doctoral students may be appointed as an Assistant Instructors (AI), a position that involves teaching an undergraduate class.  To qualify for appointment as an AI, the applicant must hold a master's degree and have credit for BA 398T (a required course in teaching methodology for graduate assistants) at The University of Texas.

Students from out-of-state who are appointed as TAs or IAs are entitled to pay in-state tuition, and will be eligible for the benefits package (health insurance, etc.) offered by The University of Texas.  The TA or IA must be employed at least half-time to be eligible for in-state tuition.

Research Assistantships

Each year several students are appointed as Research Assistants (RA) to help faculty in their funded research projects.  Other opportunities exist for work in research centers as the IC2 Institute.

Other Financial Aid

The Dean of Graduate Studies and the Management Department administer funds to assist students with travel costs incurred for presenting papers at meetings of learned societies.  Deadline dates for applications for these funds each semester are published well in advance.

Many trade associations, academic organizations (e.g., The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), and other groups offer financial assistance on a competitive basis, especially for students who are working full-time on dissertations.
