Research Areas:     Operations Management

Uttarayan Bagchi headshot

Uttarayan Bagchi is a professor at The University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business. Within the school’s Department of Information, Risk, and Operations Management, he has taught courses covering operations management, total quality management, strategic supply chain management, sequencing and scheduling, risk analysis, and strategic decision analysis. He previously taught in the school’s Department of Management.

Bagchi has published research on cost relationships in stochastic inventory, static stochastic order crossover, and the effect of increasing commonality on service level and holding cost systems. His articles have appeared in Naval Research Logistics and the International Journal of Production Economics.

He has also co-authored a book chapter on the effect of RFID on inventory management and control for the textbook “Trends in Supply Chain Design and Management Technologies and Methodologies.” For his expertise in his field, Bagchi has been invited to present his research at numerous conferences in America and overseas, such as the INFORMS International in Taipei and the TIMS/ORSA Joint National Meeting in Los Angelos, where he discussed scheduling, optimization, and process theory.

Prior to joining McCombs, Bagchi worked as a professor for Pennsylvania State University, where he taught management courses on operations management and operations planning and control. He was also a visiting associate professor at the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration for two summers in 1989 and 1991.

Bagchi earned a B.Sc. and M.Sc, both in chemistry, from the Indian Institute of Technology. He also earned a master’s in chemistry from Washington State University and a Ph.D. in operations management from Pennsylvania State University.
