A life-long learner, Elizabeth returned to school after a satisfying life as a community advocate and mother, earning her PhD in Communication Studies from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2016. An avid tennis player, Elizabeth’s dissertation work explored athletic contexts and how self-determined behavior is motivated generationally through encouraging communication. As the Director of Communication for the Capital Area Tennis Association in Austin, Texas, one of Dr. Hanson Smith’s joys was creating Family Play Days and encouraging new generations of players to love tennis. Putting her training as a writing and speaking consultant to good use, Dr. Hanson Smith currently teaches business and professional communication classes at universities in Texas where she thrives on connecting with students, sharing her energy and positivity, and staying healthy physically and mentally through hobbies like writing, reading, tennis, and table tennis. In her spare time, Elizabeth teaches life skills and GED classes to students in correctional facilities.
