Create Your Profile

Used by celebrities, political figures, corporations, non-profits and more, Facebook is now THE online hub for most of the world. Your Facebook presence is accessible to everyone on the Internet, and should be updated frequently (one-to-three times a day) with compelling (fun, informative, evocative) content for your target audience.

There are three ways to establish a strong Facebook presence. If you work for McCombs, you'll use only one.

  • Fan Page - This is the type of page you should create for your McCombs department or program. It's a public-facing profile that allows global users to visit and 'like' your page and all its content. It's ideal for our marketing purposes!
  • Group - While a group might seem similar to a fan page, it's actually very different in an important way: it's private. Reaching an audience is very hard when they have to go through several inconvenient steps to see your content. Avoid groups!
  • Personal Profile - Obviously you won't use personal profiles for your McCombs accounts, but we included information to help any users who might be new to Facebook and want to create their own presence on their own time.

How to Create Pages

Your McCombs Facebook Page

If you need a Facebook presence for your McCombs department or program, this is what you want to use.

A fun and vibrant Facebook presence is crucial to the success of any McCombs department or program. Put some real thought into who your audience is, why they might visit your page, and what you want to say to them. Let these ideas guide you when posting fresh content every day.

Create Your Page

  • Go to
  • You will be give an option to Sign Up
  • At the bottom of the page is a link that says "Create a Page" - Click it!
  • Choose a page for a Company, Organization or Institution
  • Enter the category and a name for your page
    Ex. McCombs School of Business Executive MBA Program
  • Click "Get Started"
  • If you don't already have a personal Facebook account to associate with this one, you must provide a valid email, password and date of birth.
  • If you do have a personal Facebook page, use your current account info to sign up as the admin for your new McCombs Facebook page.

Set Up Your New Page

  • Choose a clear, bright and eye-catching Profile Picture to represent your page. You will be given the option to "Upload From Computer" or "Import From Website."
    Ex. If you work for the Accounting Department, try uploading a group picture of the academic or administrative team.
  • Fill out the About section of your page profile. You will be asked to provide some basic information about your new Facebook page. Make it snappy and fun and keep it short. Tell people what your department does and what they will find on this page.
    Very important note: Include your McCombs website URL to improve your SEO ranking and attract people!
  • Choose your Facebook Web Address. Make sure you choose something unique to your department/program. Facebook will suggest one for you but you can choose your own.
    Very important note 2: Once you set your Facebook Web Address, it cannot be changed!

The Admin Panel (the fun part!)

Once you've got your new page all set up, you'll be navigated to your Admin Panel (because you're the Admin!). It's time to start adding great content and reaching out to people. Here's what it will look like!

  • The top right side of the page will have options to let you Edit Page, Build Audience, get Help, or Hide.
  • The Notifications section allows you to begin posting links, pictures and videos right away.
  • In the Messages section you'll receive alerts to new ... wait for it ... messages! You can turn these off if you like.
  • New Likes lets you invite people to like your page, invite people using existing email contacts, and share your page on your timeline so fans can easily navigate there when it appears in their news feed.
  • Insights allows you to see what kind of activity your page is getting. But first you'll need at least 30 people to 'like' it!
  • Below all the above sections you'll see your profile as it appears to others.


Facebook groups are for communication between much smaller networks of people. They offer a place to get together and share content and ideas privately. This is not the type of page you want to use for McCombs departments and program, but they do have some uses.

Who Sees Your Group

Groups can be public, require approval for members to join, or can be private. These are used to build traffic around particular parts of your site.

Good Uses for Groups

Unlike pages, which are designed to broadcast to a larger audience (any prospective business students, for instance), groups are generally less public, and excellent for small, local teams of individuals to gather online and discuss shared interests and issues.

They work well for creating spaces that classes can organize around. Lecture notes and assignments can be posted, and students can message one another as well as the instructor.

Create a Group

**Note: You must have a PAGE before you create a group**

  • In the left hand column of your home page, click Create Group
  • A pop-up box will appear.  Here, you can title your group, add members, and select privacy settings. Click Create Group when finished.

Types of Group Privacy Settings

  • Open – Anyone on Facebook may look up, visit and join, and can also see everything that is posted and discussed.
  • Closed – Anyone on Facebook can see that the group exists, as well as its members, but only members have access to the group’s content. Those who want to join can have their friends add them, or can ask the administrator to be a member.
  • Secret – ONLY members can see or access anything concerning the group. Neither its name nor its members will appear in searches, or on members’ timelines.

Add People to a Group

To add people, click the + Add Friends to Group field in the right-hand column, and then add your friends’ names into the text box one at a time. Facebook allows any individual to participate in your group without having to become friends with you or other members.

Personal Profiles

Personal pages or profiles can be highly visible and accessible or very private, depending on what you're interested in sharing and who you want to reach. Facebook allows you to adjust your settings so that only certain members in your network can see particular updates. Profiles are usually for personal friendships rather than larger sites.

Create a Personal Profile

  • Creating a personal page is the default activity on Facebook’s home page. 
  • Head to and fill out the necessary information (email, name, DOB) under Sign Up to get started.
