Program Information

  • How do the Working Professional MBA programs compare to the Executive MBA programs?

    Differences in Class Profile: The main difference is the class profile, particularly with regard to work experience and geographic location. Working Professional MBAs are required to have a minimum of two years work experience and work and live in the metro area for each program (Austin, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth). Executive MBAs are required to have a minimum of five years work experience and students are from around the country. For more details on class profile, see the following links:


    Differences in Curriculum: Academic Intensives (immersion courses) for Working Professional MBAs take place in August of each program year. Executive MBAs attend four one-week Executive Seminars at specified times during the program.

    Other Differences: The schedule and length of the programs differ, but students from all programs participate in study groups that meet outside of class and all students remain fully employed for the length of the program.   • Is this the same degree as the Full-Time Texas MBA?

    The McCombs School of Business confers only one MBA degree. All Texas MBA candidates earn the same degree, regardless of the program they are registered in.

  • Where are the Austin Intensive Experience and the Austin Executive Seminars held?

    During the Austin Intensive and Executive Seminars, students reside at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center on the UT& Austin campus. Students will be in-residence during the week at the Austin Intensive site and should not plan for any work activity during this time.

  • Does this program require corporate sponsorship?

    Since classes are held outside of normal working hours, McCombs does not require formal corporate sponsorship. However, it is important for you to ensure that your employer (especially direct supervisors) supports participation in the Texas MBA program. Work and travel schedules should be arranged so that you can attend the scheduled classes and Austin Intensives or Executive Seminars. You may need to obtain your employer's approval to attend the Austin Intensives or Executive Seminars and/or plan on scheduling vacation time.

Class & Curriculum

  • What will the class size be?

    The class size be approximately 75 students in Austin, 80 in Dallas, 90 in Houston.

  • How many classes will I take each semester?
  • What is a cohort system?

    Students enter as a cohort class, meaning the same group of students will take the same sequence of courses together. There are two cohorts each in the Dallas and Houston programs, and one each for the Evening and Executive programs.

  • How much time should I expect to spend doing work for the program outside of class?

    The typical student should expect to spend 10-15 hours per week preparing for class and attending study group meetings.

  • May I place out of classes if I have extensive education or experience in a functional area?

    No. The McCombs School of Business does not allow course waivers.

  • May I transfer graduate business courses from other universities?

    No. The McCombs School of Business does not allow transfer credits from other universities.

Admissions/Applying

  • May I apply to more than one Texas MBA program at the same time?
    Yes, you may apply to more than one Texas MBA program. You must submit separate applications and our admissions team will work with you to share components of your application between programs. You will pay only one application fee. Contact admissions after you submit the second application.
  • Do you conduct admission interviews?

    Applicants who submit the required application materials are considered for an interview. Interviews are by invitation only.

  • If I have been admitted, may I defer admittance?

    If a student has been admitted to the Evening MBA program, he or she may request to defer admission to the following year's class.

  • Can I waive the TOEFL or IELTS?

    U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents do not need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. A waiver of the TOEFL or IELTS is automatically granted (no request needed) if you are an international applicant and have earned an undergraduate degree in a country where the official language is English (not just an English-speaking institution or a country where English is spoken) (see country list here).

    In order to request a TOEFL or IELTS waiver you must have submitted a Texas MBA application AND meet one of the following conditions:

    • 1) You have lived and worked full-time in the U.S. or in a country where English is the official language for at least two of the past four years (see country list here).
    • 2) You hold a masters degree from a college or university located in the U.S. or from a country where English is the official language (see country list here).
    • 3) You were educated solely in English for your undergraduate and/or prior graduate degree.

    If you do not meet any of these conditions, you are required to submit the TOEFL exam without exception. If you meet the conditions above, please check the appropriate box requesting the waiver in the test score section of your application. You will receive a confirmation of your waiver decision within two weeks of submitting your application.

  • Are there scholarships available or other financial aid?

  • When are tuition payments due?
    An invoice will be sent directly to the student prior to each semester. Payment is due in full approximately six weeks prior to the start of each semester. Regardless of whether a student is seeking financial aid or receiving a full or part

    ial reimbursement from an employer, he/she is still responsible for payment in full prior to the start of each semester. The University of Texas will reimburse the student if additional payment is made after the semester payment deadline by another party.

  • Are there any additional program costs if I don't meet Texas residency requirements?

    Yes, you will have to pay an additional out-of-state program fee plus any additional University fees for each semester you do not meet the Texas residency requirements. This fee is set each year by the legislature. Please review the Program Costs & Financial Aid for each program for details.

  • How do I establish Texas residency?

    Texas Residency status is handled by the University of Texas residency department. All Texas MBA applicants default to non-resident until an offer of admission is accepted and the applicant completes the Residency Questionnaire found online.
