Academic Advisors and Career Coaches

All incoming MPA students are required to schedule an initial academic advising and career coaching appointment in the summer. Virtual appointments will be available.

Academic Advisors

Your academic advisor will review your undergraduate transcript(s) to determine if you have satisfied the pre-enrollment requirements and if any MPA classes can be waived or substituted.

Students who are beginning the MPA program in the fall are strongly encouraged to schedule their academic advising appointment before July 22, 2020 in order to take advantage of the early course registration period. Later appointment dates are also available, if necessary. Initial academic advising appointments will begin on June 8, 2020.

Students who are required to start in the summer should schedule an academic advising appointment before July 10, 2020.

Career Coaches

You are required to meet with your career coach whether or not you are planning to participate in the Texas McCombs recruiting process.

If you are planning to participate in the recruiting process, you must meet with your career coach before July 3, 2020. Initial career advising appointments will begin on June 1, 2020. Your resume for recruiting is due on July 8, 2020.

If you are not recruiting, you must meet with your career coach for your initial career advising appointment from July 13 through August 14, 2020.

The MPA Career Management team is available to assist you with not only recruiting, but with other career-related topics such as:

  • Career options with an MPA degree
  • Researching, identifying, and applying for positions
  • Resume critique
  • Writing a cover letter
  • Communicating with employers
  • Networking
  • Interview preparation and practice
  • LinkedIn and social media presence
  • Handling delicate recruiting issues
  • Evaluating a job offer

MPA Orientation

International Students

Welcome to the Texas McCombs MPA! On-site MPA Orientation events will be held August 18 - 20, 2020. Attendance is mandatory except for those events marked as optional.

INTERNATIONAL MPA STUDENT ORIENTATION

International MPA students are invited and highly encouraged to attend the International MPA Orientation in addition to the general MPA Orientation. MPA staff and students will provide important information on the CPA, tips for participating in class, recruiting strategies and much more. International MPA Orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2020.

Career Webinar

The MPA Career Orientation Webinar provides important recruiting information about specific career services, events, and resources available to help you throughout the career development and job search process. All new students who plan to participate in on-campus recruiting are required to participate in a session. You do not need to be on campus to attend this webinar.

Please register for one of the following Career Orientation Webinar dates:

May 19, 12:00-1:00 p.m. CDT

May 29, 4:00-5:00 p.m. CDT

June 8, 4:00-5:00 p.m. CDT

June 11, 6:00-7:00 p.m. CDT

All 3 sessions will cover the same information.  We strongly suggest that you participate in the webinar before your initial career advising appointment. 

Excel Training

Due to the importance and prevalence of Microsoft Excel, incoming MPA students are highly encouraged to complete online Excel training. Details on the online Excel training can be found here.

Tech Orientation

The online MPA Technology Orientation will introduce you to various technology resources in the McCombs School of Business and at UT-Austin.

UTmail provides UT-Austin students with a university-affiliated email address for life. Those who opt in to the free service can choose their email address and have 30+ GB of email storage. 

It is important to keep your email address up-to-date in UT Direct at all times. Students are expected to check email frequently in order to stay current with University-related communications, recognizing that certain communications may be time-critical.
