Professor Michael Poehl had a successful 28 years in the Petrochemical Industry before joining the faculty in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Upon graduation from the University of Texas with honors in May 1974, Professor Poehl went to work for Amoco Chemicals at their Chocolate Bayou location near Alvin, Texas. He has extensive experience in Olefins and PolyOlefins manufacturing, along with several patents associated with gas phase technology to produce High Density Polyethylene (HDPE).

Professor Poehl received an Executive MBA with highest honors in 1986 from the University of Houston, which shifted his career to the business arena of Amoco. His initial job was as a Business Manager of Styrene and Maleic Anhydride, and later became National Sales Manager for Industrial Intermediates. Returning to his manufacturing roots Professor Poehl was Plant Manager at both Greenville, South Carolina and Texas City, Texas.

A move to the Upstream was the next career step for Professor Poehl as Vice President for Amoco Energy Group – North America located in Denver, Colorado. After the BP- Amoco merger he returned to Chocolate Bayou as Plant Manager until he retired in 2001. Since the Fall of 2001, Professor Poehl has taught numerous Chemical Engineering courses focused on applications, primarily Plant Design and Economics and Unit Operations I.
