Get to Know HMTF

The Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst (HMTF) Center for Private Equity Finance was founded at The University of Texas at Austin in 2000. The HMTF Center was made possible by generous gifts from the partners at HMTF. This website describes the objectives of the HMTF Center, the educational and research programs that it supports, and how to contact members of the center staff.

Objective

Objective

The purpose of the Center is to support curriculum development in a private equity specialization in the McCombs School MBA program. The center also fosters research and scholarship by finance faculty and graduate students on issues related to private equity finance, capital markets, corporate finance, investments, real estate, and other associated matter.

Research

Research

The Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst Center for Private Equity Finance supports research on issues related to private equity finance, capital markets, corporate finance, investments, real estate, and other associated areas.  The finance faculty at the McCombs School includes a number of highly accomplished researchers who study areas of finance related to the private equity market.  The center supports research by these faculty as well as by the Ph.D. students who work with them.  The objective of this research is to help us better understand the private equity market and the financial activities of the participants in this market.

Curriculum

Private Equity in the MBA Program at The McCombs School of Business

The Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst Center for Private Equity Finance supports development of the private equity finance curricula in the McCombs School of Business graduate and undergraduate programs. These curricula are designed to help students prepare for careers that require an in-depth understanding of the private equity market. While there is a heavy emphasis on finance, the curricula are multi-disciplinary. They include courses in all of the traditional functional areas of business as well as more specialized courses covering concepts directly related to the private equity market and managing private equity investments. The curricula develop skills that are especially important for students interested in careers with investors in private equity funds, private equity fund managers, issuers of private equity securities, or other important participants in the private equity markets, such as commercial banks or other investment advisors or agents.

Conferences

Forum on Corporate Finance (FCF)

The HMTF Center for Private Equity Finance periodically sponsors the Forum on Corporate Finance, a conference through which senior financial executives and leading academicians from top business schools share and debate their insights regarding the current environment faced by corporate financial managers.  This conference allows participants to integrate insights from leading-edge research with real-world experiences of key decision-makers.  Moreover, the non-sales oriented atmosphere of these meetings provides participants an unusual opportunity to reflect on the major corporate decisions they face, a task that is often difficult to do given the pressing demands that often dominate their attention.

Texas Private Equity Conference (TPEC)

The Center periodically hosts conferences that focus on the private equity market. These conferences facilitate discussion between participants in the private equity market and researchers that study this market. They also provide an opportunity for students in the private equity finance specialization program to enhance their understanding of the private equity market. The conferences bring together investors, private equity fund managers, issuers of private equity securities, commercial and investment bankers, and leading researchers from throughout the country.

Scholarships

Each year the Center awards eight $1,250 merit-based scholarships to McCombs graduate students who are interested in the study of private equity finance. These scholarships will be awarded to first year MBA students who express an interest in the study of private equity finance, or can be awarded to Ph.D. students. The scholarships are named in honor of the partners at Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, who provide financial support for the Center.

Qualified students can download a scholarship application form. The deadline to submit applications is Monday, December 10, 2018.
