Academic Advisors and Career Consultants

All students are required to meet with an academic advisor when they enter the MPA program. Students who plan to participate in the McCombs recruiting process are strongly encouraged to meet with a career consultant, as well.

Academic Advisors

Your academic advisor will review your undergraduate transcript(s) to determine if you have satisfied the pre-enrollment requirements and if any MPA classes can be waived or substituted.

Students who are beginning the MPA program in the fall should schedule an academic advising appointment before August 15, 2016. International students are strongly encouraged to meet with their academic advisor before August 8.

Students who are required to start in the summer should schedule an academic advising appointment before July 8, 2016.

Career Consultants

If you are planning on participating in the McCombs recruiting process, it is strongly recommended that you speak to a career consultant first. We are happy to review your resume in preparation for the resume book deadline (July 13, 2016) and discuss any of the following in your appointment:

Writing a cover letter

MPA Orientation

Welcome to the Texas MPA! On-site MPA Orientation events will be held throughout the week of August 15, 2016. Attendance is mandatory except for those events marked as optional.

MPA International Student Orientation:

International MPA students are invited and highly encouraged to attend the MPA International Student Orientation in addition to the general MPA Orientation program. MPA staff and students will provide important information on topics including obtaining your OPT/CPT, CPA, tips for participating in class, recruiting strategies and much more.

International MPA Orientation will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016. The time and location will be posted to this web page as soon as they are finalized.

Before Your Orientation

There are a number of important items newly accepted students must consider before their official MPA Orientation:

Excel Training >

Excel Training

Due to the importance and prevalence of Microsoft Excel, every incoming MPA student is required to complete online Excel training no later than July 1, 2016. Please contact the MPA Program Office if you have any questions.

Technology Orientation

Instructions for setting up your McCombs technology account are available in the online MPA Technology Orientation. You must set up your McCombs (MSB) account before the first day of MPA Orientation.

UTmail provides UT-Austin students with a university-affiliated email address for life. Those who opt in to the free service can choose their email address and have 30+ GB of email storage. You are eligible to sign up for UTmail after you enroll in and pay for your first semester's classes.

It is important to keep your email address up-to-date in UT Direct at all times. Students are expected to check email frequently in order to stay current with University-related communications, recognizing that certain communications may be time-critical.


Webinar

The MPA Career Orientation Webinar will provide important recruiting information about specific career services, events and resources available to help you throughout the career development and job search process. All new students who plan to participate in on-campus recruiting are required to participate in one of these sessions. You do not have to be on campus to attend this webinar.
