Research Excellence Grants

Call for Proposals

The Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) is pleased to announce a special summer award for Research Excellence Grants.   While the regular Research Excellence Grants are not available over the summer, CIBER will have limited funds to support summer research on issues related to International Business.

 The McCombs Research Excellence Grant program seeks to promote research excellence in the school by supporting influential and high quality faculty research projects that require substantive funding but cannot be funded through other sources (e.g., ADF or other discretionary funds).  Examples of research-related costs covered by these grants include costs for data gathering and analysis, research assistantships, purchase of expensive databases, and funds to organize academic conferences at the school.

CIBER Summer Research Excellence Grants may range from $2,000 to $15,000 each; The CIBER Summer Research Excellence grants will use the similar criteria for selection as the McCombs Research Excellence Grant program with the addition that proposals will be evaluated in light of the likely impact on our understanding of the specific dynamics of business in a global/international context.  These criteria for awarding research excellence grants include the novelty and likely academic impact of the proposed research in understanding global business, its potential to significantly enhance the research reputation of the faculty and the school; and its likelihood to create a long-term international business research stream for faculty members and/or graduate students associated with the research.  Preference will be given to proposals for which the investigator has obtained matching funds from other sources and to projects that entail collaboration among multiple McCombs faculty members.  For software and database purchase requests, priority will be given to software/databases that other faculty colleagues and students might also find useful.

To apply for a research excellence grant, please submit a three-page proposal (maximum) along with your current vita to the CIBER Director at  The deadline to apply for funding for this summer is March 31st.  The proposal should emphasize the project’s relevance and importance, and how it benefits the school.  Specifically, it should include the following items:

1.      Title of project, name of principal investigator(s) (must be McCombs tenure-track or tenured faculty members), and project duration;

2.      Motivation and description of the research project, including why it is novel and important;

3.      Anticipated outcomes (deliverables) and impact;

4.      For database purchase requests: list other faculty members or students who could benefit from this acquisition.  Also, consult with Business Librarian and Computer Services (see notes at the end of this document);

5.      Alternative sources of funding explored, availability of matching funds, and why discretionary funds (e.g., ADF, endowment, departmental funds) cannot be used;

6.      Budget, with justification (Please note that CIBER research funds may be used for research related travel.  However, in accordance with U.S. Department of Education policy, any international travel under these grants will     require a very detailed budget with all specifics on how funds will be spent, including all specific forms of transportation, lodging, meals, and specific incidentals.  U.S. air carriers must be used when available.    Requests that include domestic travel should indicate how travel funds will be allocated in a more general format);

7.      A summary of progress and outcomes of any previous McCombs Research Excellence Grants awarded to the investigators.

Examples of previous research projects funded by the McCombs Research Excellence Grant program are available via the school’s Faculty/Research web page:
