One year master's program focused on the intersection of business, technology and innovation.

At the Texas McCombs M.S. in Technology Commercialization program, we teach students how to launch new businesses and products into the market either through a venture of their own or an existing corporation. Students can attend classes in Austin, Texas, or online via video conferencing. MSTC has climbed to No. 6 in the latest annual ranking of the top 25 graduate entrepreneurship programs in the U.S. by Princeton Review/Entrepreneurship Magazine.

This STEM-designated degree combines cutting-edge technology and hands-on entrepreneurship, resulting in the creation of innovative ventures and products for over two decades. MSTC's one-year immersion in technology entrepreneurship remains one of the most popular and diverse programs for working professionals who want to take innovations to market. The coursework includes a proprietary approach for reaching "go-no-go" decisions in the commercialization phase of business.

Our home, Texas McCombs, is a premier business school at The University of Texas in Austin, a world-class public research university. Through high-quality instruction, experiential learning, and the pursuit of relevant, groundbreaking research, we are shaping those who will shape tomorrow and solve our most challenging problems.

Flexible Schedule

Designed for working professionals, students attend class every other weekend—Friday evening and all day Saturday—either on campus or online via remote conferencing. In addition to alternating class weekends, the Summer semester begins with a week-long residence here in Austin. The Fall semester also begins with a week long intensive, which students can attend in person or online. In December during your Fall semester you’ll apply your knowledge as part of the much anticipated global trip to a location such as Singapore, Portugal, or South Africa.

Remember: If your schedule gets too busy you can attend your classes remotely online.

Participants may choose to attend Texas McCombs MSTC class weekends on campus in Austin, via online web conferencing, or utilize a combination of the two options. As classes are archived online after the live session, participants may watch the lectures later if they are unable to make the live class or desire review.

Our online students follow the same rigorous curriculum as the students that attend person, and the majority of project teams will have a combination of both online and in-person students. Our online students participate live during classes via live web streams and follow the same assignment schedules as their in-person counterparts. The online education option for our one-year master's degree provides maximum flexibility and convenience to those who work or reside beyond the Central Texas area.

Real-world, hands-on

Students work with real technologies developed at The University of Texas and other leading universities across the US. Occasionally students will work on developing their own idea, or licensable tech from leading organizations like NASA. Throughout the year students compete in business plan competitions judged by entrepreneurs, investors, and Texas MSTC graduates, and dive into the fast and growing startup world of Austin, TX. The Texas McCombs MSTC Program was first launched in 1996 to train business professionals to commercialize the technologies emerging from the university. Since 1996, several businesses have launched out of the Texas McCombs MSTC Program including Apptronik, Alafair Biosciences, Datical, MedNoxa, Seismos.

Not technical

First and foremost, Texas McCombs MSTC is a business degree that focuses on profitably bringing new products and businesses to market, rather than the technical creation of technologies. You will be asked to do technology market research to discover answers to determine how a technology enabled product or service will be profitable. You do not need to understand how to build the technology or how it works, you need to understand what it accomplishes in the market and who your customers will be. That's not a technical question, that's a business question.

Diverse Perspectives

Woven into the fabric of the Texas MSTC Program is a commitment to a diversity of perspectives. With 41% of its students from underrepresented communities and 27% international students, MSTC is the most diverse program at McCombs and continues to champion inclusion in the business community. We know that collaboration drives everything we do, and we strive to develop students with mindsets that transcend geographic and cultural boundaries.
