Luiz Brandao

Luiz Brandao is a visiting associate professor with The University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business, teaching in the Department of Information, Risk, and Operations Management.

Brandao’s research concerns analyzing and valuing R&D projects and real options projects, creating strategies for investments, and creating strategies for environmental management. He has been invited to present his work at the INFORMS Annual Meeting, International Real Options Conference, Brazilian Academy of Management, International Association for Energy Economics – IAEE, and the Latin American Energy Economics Conference – ELAEE.

Brandao has had an extensive career in consulting and teaching data science, engineering, and management for multiple institutions and corporations, such as Shell Oil, the Brazilian National Development Bank, and the Brazilian National Electricity Regulator. He has also been invited to referee journals and economics boards, including Decision Analysis, European Journal of Operational Research, Annals of Operations Research, Journal of Risk and Financial Management, Energy Economics, and The Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance. 

Brandao earned a B.S. in civil engineering from Pontifícia Universidade Católica at Rio de Janeiro. He also earned a master’s in civil engineering and an MBA in finance and information systems, both from Stanford University. He holds a Ph.D. in finance from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica.
