PhD Admissions
Admissions Overview
Prospective graduate students are encouraged to visit the Office of Graduate School's website for general information about the Graduate School at The University of Texas at Austin.
Applicants are also advised to visit the Graduate and International Admissions Center's (GIAC) website for the complete information on the university's policies on the admissions process.
Each individual department in the McCombs School of Business has a separate admissions process. Please make sure to check the requirements of the department that you are applying for carefully.
Admission involves consideration primarily of the applicant's Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) score or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score, performance in previous academic work, Statement of Purpose and letters of recommendation from faculty members. Students currently in the doctoral programs generally have GMAT scores approaching 700 and grade point averages above 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
All programs require that new students begin in the fall semester and that all students be enrolled on a full-time basis.
Application Procedure
Please review the detailed application information on The Graduate and International Admissions Center's (GIAC) website.
Please note that there are two parts to the application process. First, all applicants must apply online at Apply Texas and submit all appropriate documents required (i.e. official transcripts, official test scores, etc.). Second, each department requires additional materials for the admissions process. Please check the appropriate department’s website for details.
Financial Aid
Financial aid forms are available from UT's Office of Student Financial Services. Teaching assistants (TA) or Assistant instructors (AI) and students on certain fellowships or scholarships pay in-state tuition and fees.
Housing
Most graduate students at UT Austin live off campus in one of the many residential areas throughout the city. Numerous houses and apartments are available for rent in areas near campus. It is advisable to secure living accommodations well before classes begin as housing can become scarce by the end of summer. Austin has a large number of apartment locating services for both single students and families.
University residence halls and University owned apartments are options open to all students, but there is usually a long waiting list for University housing. Some University housing is restricted to graduate students only. For information on housing available through the University, contact:
