STEPS FOR SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION

The University of Texas at Austin requires graduate school applicants to have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a comparable degree from a foreign institution.

1. Complete the MPA pre-enrollment requirements.

2. Obtain copies of your official transcripts and, if applicable, have official test scores sent to UT Austin.

3. Review the MPA admissions blog for tips on applying.

4. Send us an email with your application questions or schedule a consultation with our admissions team.

1. Review the detailed application instructions in the tMPA admissions packet.

2. If needed, create a UT EID to log into the McCombs application portal.

3. Submit a completed online application no later than 11:59 pm CT on the stated deadline. We encourage you to apply as early as possible.

1. One to two business days after application submission, complete your application with UT’s Office of Graduate Admissions. Pay the application fee, upload copies of official transcripts and (if applicable) confirm receipt of official test scores.

2. Verify the receipt of your recommendation letters in the McCombs application portal.

Once your McCombs and Office of Graduate Admissions application checklists are complete, monitor your application status and check your email inbox for any application updates. Any resume, transcript or test score updates (if any) should be submitted through the McCombs application portal as soon as possible. Please note that there is no guarantee that your update(s) will be considered for the evaluation of your candidacy.

An interview is not required, and applicants cannot request an interview as part of the MPA admissions process. However, the admissions committee may request an interview on a case-by-case basis.

U.S. applications are reviewed on a continuous basis (in the order of completion) between the early and final deadlines. International applications are reviewed in two rounds (after the early and final deadlines) rather than on a rolling basis. Once an admissions decision is released, you will receive an automated email to view your decision. All decisions are final for the admissions cycle.

If you are admitted, the MPA program will send you details on the next steps, including how to formally accept your offer of admission and pay your enrollment deposit. Texas residents need to submit Residency Core Questions to establish residency with UT Austin.

Application Resources
Read through the tMPA Admissions FAQ and the instructions in the tMPA admissions packet carefully before starting your application. These resources will help answer questions as you apply to the program.
You Are Not a Number
The MPA Admissions Committee takes all your application materials into account. Your essays, prior academic performance, letters of recommendation, and non-academic achievements all play an important role in your acceptance into the MPA program. Find tips on enhancing your application on our admissions blog.

Admissions for International Students

You will apply as an international applicant if you do not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status, even if you earned your undergraduate degree in the U.S. International applicants should take note of the following items:

TOEFL or IELTS Scores

MPA students interact with employers and participate in English-instructed classes from the beginning of their first semester. As a result, applicants must possess exceptional English skills to be considered for our program. All international applicants, except those from qualifying countries or those with a bachelor’s degree from an qualifying country, must submit either a TOEFL or IELTS official score report for the MPA application.

Our preferred minimum for the TOEFL is 105 overall, with a minimum of 24 for each individual section, or minimum band scores of 7.5 for the IELTS.

Financial Responsibility

U.S. immigration regulations require every international student to verify the availability of financial resources to pay for all educational, living, and other expenses prior to the issuance of the F-1 or J-1 visa. Please refer to the UT Financial Requirements for more details. The financial information is used for immigration document processing, not for admissions purposes, and is not required for the completion of an admissions application.

Financial Assistance

International students should be prepared to finance the entire period of proposed study from personal funds or from funds from other sources, as financial aid is extremely limited.

International Office

The University of Texas at Austin’s International Office assists foreign students during their stay in the U.S. and is responsible for issuing immigration documents, providing assistance securing visas, and reviewing requests for renewal and changes in immigration status. The office also provides information on housing, orientation, immigration status, financial aid, health insurance, legal questions, employment, automobile licensing, income tax status, and social security regulations.
