The Export Fellows program brings together students and Texas Camino Real District Export Council members to explore export marketing principles and practices for six weeks, culminating in a final presentation and a certification from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

About the Program

The Export Fellows program is an intensive six-week course taught by members of the Texas Camino Real District Export Council – the leading District Export Council in the nation.  Participants explore what makes a product or service “exportable,” market entry feasibility assessments, supply chain logistics, and non-tariff barriers to trade, and upon completion of the program they receive a certification from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Program Dates

Weekly sessions meet from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm on five (non-home game) Saturdays, with breakfast provided.  The program concludes with final presentations will on Friday, November 7, followed by a celebration luncheon with program faculty.

The Texas Camino Real District Export Council (TCRDEC) is a non-profit, private-sector advisory group whose mission is to grow Texas’ economy by boosting U.S. exports. Appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, TCRDEC members are a diverse volunteer group of International Trade Professionals from across Central and South Texas.

Michelle Vaca-Senecal is a member of the International Business Faculty at UT Austin, teaching both International Trade (IB 350) and Foundations of International Business (IB 320F) . She also teaches as part of UT's Management in Prague program, and serves as the Education Chair of the Texas Camino Real District Export Council

Ben Ramirez is the CEO of Cogitare Global and the VP and Executive Director of the Center for Global trade - part of the World Affairs Council of Austin. He is a long-time member of the Texas Camino Real Export Council, and has helped bring the U.S. Department of Commerce Export Fellows program to universities across Texas.
FAQs
Who is eligible for this program?

UT Austin undergraduates (from all majors) with an in-residence GPA of 2.5 are eligible to participate. No previous knowledge of international trade, supply chain management, or marketing is required.

How can I apply to this program?

Interested students can apply to the program at www.bit.ly/export-fellows. Applications will be reviewed and decisions will be announced on a rolling basis until September 12.

Please note that applicants will be asked to provide:

  • a brief statement on interest in and commitment to the program
  • a copy of the participant’s resume

How competitive is the program?

The program admits a maximum of 25 students per year, and factors in admission include (1) interest in the subject matter and commitment to completion of the program, and (2) academic and professional experience.  Preference is given to upper division students.

What is the time commitment for this program?

Students are required to attend and participate in all five weekly 3-hour sessions of the program, as well as the full day during program presentations.  Participants will also need to be prepared to spend additional time outside of these sessions to work with on their team project.

Does this program conflict with UT Football Games?

Football season can be a large part of the college experience at UT, so these dates were chosen so that the program does not meet on Saturdays when UT is playing at home:

  • September 27 – No Game
  • October 4 – Away at Florida
  • October 11 – Away at Oklahoma 
  • October 18 – Away at Kentucky
  • October 25 – Away at MS State
  • November 7 (Friday) – No Game on Saturday

The weekly meeting time of 9:00 am – 12:00 pm has been also selected to ensure that sessions conclude in time for participants to enjoy watching away games.
