Applying to a Dual Degree Program

An applicant seeking admission to an MBA/dual degree program must apply to both programs by submitting two applications: the Texas McCombs Hildebrand MBA application AND the dual degree program application via the Graduate School, unless otherwise noted below.
MBA/MD: Presently, only second-year MD students currently enrolled in the medical school at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School are eligible to apply for the MBA/Doctor of Medicine dual degree program. Applicants are only required to complete the MBA application.
MBA/JD: Applicants who are not currently enrolled Austin Law students must apply directly to the School of Law through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), in addition to completing the MBA application. Currently enrolled Austin Law students should complete the MBA application. Law students may apply prior to beginning either program, or during years one or two of law school.
MBA/MSSW: Applicants who are not currently enrolled Social Work students must apply directly to the School of Social Work, in addition to completing the MBA application. Currently enrolled Social Work students are only required to complete the MBA Application.

Admissions

Applicants must be accepted by each individual program to be admitted to the dual degree program. If an applicant is admitted to only one program, with departmental approval, they may choose to pursue that degree alone by coordinating with the Office of Graduate Admissions.
A minimum of two years of full-time work experience is strongly suggested to enter any of the dual degree programs. Students applying to a dual degree with no post-graduate full-time work experience are expected to recruit for internships and employment opportunities via the non-MBA side of their dual degree, as MBA recruiters expect at least three years of full-time work experience.
Applicants who are not currently enrolled at a graduate program at UT Austin will begin their first year of study in the non-business side of the program, and do not begin MBA courses until year two. Enrolled UT Austin students who have completed the first year of studies in the non-business side will begin the MBA portion of the dual degree program in the fall.

MBA/Master of Arts in Asian Studies

The MBA/Master of Arts in Asian Studies dual degree combines advanced business studies with interdisciplinary area studies and language, responding to an increased need in both public and private sectors for business specialists with a thorough understanding of Asian politics and cultures.
Students spend their first year in the program taking Asian Studies courses and the second year taking graduate business courses. The third year is a combination of both disciplines.

Degree Requirements

Students must complete 70 – 76 hours of coursework, including:
  • 25 hours of MBA Core Courses
  • 21 hours of MBA elective courses
  • 6 upper-division or graduate hours of Asian Studies
  • 6 hours of advanced language courses (third-year level or beyond)
  • 6 hours of Asian Studies electives with at least 50% business content
PLUS
  • 6 hours of non-business Asian Studies electives and 6 hours of Asian Studies Master's Thesis
OR
  • 12 hours of non-business Asian Studies electives and 3 hours of Asian Studies Master's Report
Note: If students have fulfilled history and/or language requirements at the time of admission to the program, they may substitute electives for these courses. The Asian history and Asian language courses must be in the history and language of the region in which the student is specializing.

Language Requirements

Students must have completed at least one year of college-level study of an Asian language with a grade of B or higher – or have equivalent proficiency – before enrolling in the program. Upon completion of the program, students are expected to possess proficiency in an Asian language (ordinarily Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Malayalam, or another language with the approval of the Asian Graduate Studies Committee) equal to three years of coursework. The program encourages dual degree students to achieve a proficient level as early as possible.

MBA/Master of Arts in Communication

The MBA/Master of Arts in Communication dual degree program integrates business management with advanced communication studies. It provides students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in modern communication and business management, preparing them for leadership roles in areas such as Advertising, Communication Studies, Journalism, or Radio-Television-Film.

MBA/Master of Arts in Energy & Earth Resources

The MBA/Master of Arts in Energy and Earth Resources dual degree combines advanced studies in management with geosciences and natural resources. This program equips students with the ability to apply both business policy and scientific knowledge to energy issues across various sectors, including private industry, government, and nonprofits. Students can earn both degrees simultaneously in approximately three academic years. Degrees are awarded upon completion of the required coursework in both areas.

The MBA/Master of Global Policy Studies (MGPS) dual degree program addresses the growing demand for experts with deep understanding of global issues, governance, and cross-cultural dynamics. MBA/Master of National Security

The MBA/Master of National Security dual degree program responds to an increased need in both the public and private sectors for specialists with an advanced understanding of the national security space, governance within and among countries and companies, and cross-cultural challenges and opportunities.
Students spend their first year in the program taking national security courses and the second year taking graduate business courses. The third year is a combination of both disciplines.

Students must complete 83 hours of coursework, including:
  • 23 hours of MBA Core Courses

  • 36 hours of MNS core courses (including a summer internship and a Master's Professional Report)
Additionally, students must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English by the date of their graduation from the program. They can prove proficiency during their enrollment in the program in one of two ways:
  • Complete four semesters' worth of language study at UT or another institution of higher education, or
  • Pass a placement test at one of UT's foreign language departments.

MBA/Doctor of Jurisprudence

The MBA/Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) dual degree program at the University of Texas at Austin is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of both business management and legal principles. This dual degree is ideal for those pursuing careers that require expertise in both fields, such as corporate legal advisors, compliance officers, or roles that straddle business and legal contexts.

Master of Arts in Latin American Studies

The Master of Arts in Latin American Studies dual degree combines advanced business studies with interdisciplinary area studies and language, responding to an increased need in both public and private sectors for business specialists with a thorough understanding of Latin American politics and cultures.
Students spend their first year in the program taking Latin American Studies courses. The second year is dedicated to graduate business core courses and approved electives. The final year of coursework is a combination from both departments.
Note: Some students, particularly those who enter the program with a language deficiency, may find it necessary to enroll for an additional semester or summer session to complete all requirements for the program.

Degree Requirements

Students must complete 74 – 77 hours of coursework, including:
  • 23 hours of MBA core courses
  • 21 hours of MBA elective courses
  • 24 hours of LAS courses (includes a 15-hour major and 9-hour minor)
  • 6 hours of Latin American Studies Master's Thesis (LAS 698A and 698B), to be taken in the final semester

Language Requirements

In the first semester of the program, students must demonstrate oral and written proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese at an "intermediate mid-level," which is equivalent to two years of coursework. This requirement can be fulfilled by passing a proficiency examination, completing formal language study, or other methods approved by the Institute for Latin American Studies (ILAS). Amerindian languages may also be acceptable, subject to the discretion of the ILAS graduate advisor. Students who lack prior knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese are strongly advised to take intensive language courses during the summer before starting the program.

MBA/MD at Dell Medical School

Through the MBA/MD dual-degree program arrangement, Dell Medical School students apply the equivalent of 21 credit hours of Medical School coursework towards requirements for the MBA degree.
The MBA/MD degree requires completion of 41 credit hours of MBA coursework including:
  • 23 hours of MBA core courses
  • 18 hours of MBA elective courses

Program Structure

  • Year 1: Student enrolled in MED coursework at UTDMS
  • Year 2: Student enrolled in MED coursework at UTDMS
  • Year 3: Student enrolled in coursework required for the MBA degree and completing longitudinal courses required for the MD degree program at UTDMS
  • Year 4: Student enrolled in coursework required for the MBA degree and the MD degree at UTDMS

This program is only for third-year Dell Medical School students who are accepted into the MBA dual degree program. In order to apply for the MBA/MD dual degree program, students must be in good academic standing at Dell Medical School.
Visit the Full-Time MBA Admissions page to learn about the components of the application. Dell Medical students are required to submit their professional resume, two essays, transcripts, a letter of recommendation, a $20 UT transcript fee, and the nonrefundable $200 application fee. The GMAT/GRE is waived for Dell Medical students automatically; filling out the test petition is NOT required.

Note: The $2,000 tuition deposit will be waived for entering MD/MBA students. You will be required to accept your admission offer to confirm you are attending. There is a $1,200 student fee that is NOT waived for MD/MBA students, due in June. This goes toward orientation and student activities during the duration of your enrollment.
To safeguard the integrity of the admission process, Texas McCombs partners with Re Vera Services to conduct an employment and recommendation verification. If it is determined that there has been any misrepresentation in an applicant's MBA application, McCombs reserves the right to rescind the offer of admission. There will be a required fee paid directly to Re Vera Services at a base price of $120 USD. The verification process must be completed by the deadline specified by the MBA program office, and cannot be waived for MBA/MD students.

Master of PharmD/MBA

The PharmD/MBA dual degree program addresses the growing market demand for pharmacists with advanced business expertise while offering students an efficient path to earning both credentials. The program combines the highest level of pharmacy education with advanced business training, enabling students to complete both degrees in approximately five years rather than the traditional six. Students will gain comprehensive clinical pharmacy knowledge while developing essential business and leadership skills, preparing them for diverse career paths in pharmacy administration, healthcare leadership, pharmaceutical industry management, and entrepreneurship. The program uniquely positions graduates in the healthcare marketplace, where business acumen increasingly complements clinical expertise.
NOTE: Students who have not received their undergraduate degree are not eligible.
General progression through the PharmD/MBA dual-degree program will occur as follows:
  • Year 1: Student enrolled in coursework at the College of Pharmacy
  • Year 2: Student enrolled in coursework required for the MBA degree
  • Year 3: Student enrolled in coursework at the College of Pharmacy and a few MBA Electives, as needed
  • Year 4: Student enrolled in coursework at the College of Pharmacy and a few MBA Electives, as needed
  • Year 5: Student enrolled in coursework at the Pharmacy School

The MBA/Master of Mechanical Engineering dual degree represents an opportunity for a well-rounded professional education in the management of engineering organizations. For the mechanical engineer, this program offers the opportunity to understand the labor and management issues in engineering operations. For the engineering manager, it develops deeper insights into mechanical engineering principles.
Students spend their first year in the dual degree program taking Engineering courses. The second year is dedicated to MBA core courses and approved business electives. The MBA/Master of Arts in Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies dual degree combines advanced business studies with interdisciplinary area studies and language, responding to an increased need in both the public and private sectors for business specialists with a thorough understanding of the culture, economics, geography, history, and politics of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
Students spend their first year in the program taking Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies courses and the second year taking graduate business courses. The third year is a combination of both disciplines.

Degree Requirements

Students must complete 74 – 77 hours of coursework, including:
  • 23 hours of MBA core courses
  • 21 hours of MBA elective courses
  • 3-hour seminar in Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian civilizations and cultures
  • 9 hours of Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies courses – 3 hours from each of the three subject fields:
    • Economics/History/Government
    • Anthropology/Geography/Sociology

  • 12 hours of Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies electives

Language Requirements

Students are expected to possess proficiency in a language of the area (normally Russian, Czech, Polish or Serbo-Croatian) equal to three years of coursework. This requirement may be met either through formal language study or by passing a proficiency examination administered by a University of Texas faculty member. Students are encouraged to achieve the required level of proficiency as early as possible. Those with no previous knowledge of a Slavic, East European or Central Asian language are advised to enroll in intensive language courses during the summer prior to beginning the dual degree program. Students who are native speakers of an area language will be required to learn a second language.
Note: Before the completion of the MA degree, students are required to complete a 4th year (or equivalent) of formal language instruction and pass a proficiency examination in the area language of their choice at the ILR (Interagency Language Roundtable) Level 2 or ACTFL (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages) Advanced level.

Submitting your application

MBA/Doctor of Jurisprudence dual degree applicants must pay both the MBA application and the LSAC application fees. Applicants to other Dual Degree programs are required to only pay one application fee. The fee that must be paid is the higher of the two application fees.

MBA/MSSW applicants should contact the Office of Graduate Admissions after the submission of both applications to waive the lower application fee.  

Students currently enrolled at a graduate program at UT Austin will not pay an application fee. Please note that we are not able to refund payments once they have been made.  

Once admitted to the dual degree major code, students will begin paying the blended tuition rates. 

Applicants are responsible for submitting any department-specific supplemental materials (test scores, essays, letters, etc.) for each department. The McCombs School of Business accepts the GRE, GMAT, or Executive Assessment scores.
